Run for Fun and For Children
I’m kind of a tough cookie.
Over the years, I’ve worked as a facilitator for domestic violence support groups and as a hospital responder and crisis counselor for rape victims. I’ve seen and heard a lot of pretty terrible things over the years. I’m not saying these things don’t affect me, because of course, they do. But, you learn quickly to steel yourself against letting it all get too personal or you can’t do the job for more than a few weeks.
But, I’ve never volunteered to work with abused children. Not because I don’t care about them, but because I care too much. Nothing pulls at my heartstrings harder or makes my eyes well up faster than just the mention of a child who has been beaten – or worse. Unfortunately, you don’t have to be a news junkie to hear stories like that almost every day.
That’s why, when there is something I can do to support the amazing organizations and people who make this their life’s work, I jump at the chance. The National Children’s Advocacy Center is just such a place and its headquarters just happen to be right here in Huntsville. April is also Child Abuse Prevention Month and to commemorate that event, they are gearing up for their Third Annual Family Block Party on April 14. The block party is a ton of fun for children of all ages. There will be food, a petting zoo, games and inflatables and it’s all FREE! And that’s not all. This year, they are adding a new element to the fun. For the first time ever they are also sponsoring a Superheros Bike-a-Fun/Run and “Flash” timed and certified 1 mile race. This event is open to all ages and will begin at the NCAC Campus on Pratt Avenue. The Bike-A-Fun/Run will follow the “Flash” and will include a 5K bike and a 1 mile Fun Run. Strollers, pets, wagons, etc. are welcome for the Fun Run. For more information on any of this or to register, visit their website. Hurry, because while you can participate and register right up until the end, you won’t be guaranteed a spot or a t-shirt unless you register by April 7.
