Support Group Spotlight: Team Red White & Blue
When a family member in the military comes home from active duty overseas, it can be incredibly difficult to assimilate to their communities.
Thankfully, there are resources to help.
The Huntsville chapter of Team Red White & Blue delivers consistent, local opportunities for veterans and the community to connect through physical and social activity. They host fitness activities, social events, and participate in local races as a team. The national organization is one of the leading veteran nonprofit groups in the country.
We got in touch with Joyce Myers, Team RWB Community Outreach Co-Director for the Huntsville area, to find out more about how Team RWB can help local families.
How often do you meet?
We have a membership meeting the second Tuesday of each month and regularly occurring social and physical activity.
What goes on in a typical group meeting?
Events/Activities range from Team RWB group walks, race support/participation (5ks to triathlons), dog walks, movies, meals, indoor trampoline, kickball, etc.
Do you participate in other group outings or events?
We provide race support (packet pick-up, water point, set up, etc) at many local races to include the Huntsville Track Club Half Marathon and the Cotton Row 10K, in addition to have Team RWB members that participate in races as a registered team. We set up information booths at area events so that veterans and members of the community can become more aware of the great opportunity we present. We are planning a canned food drive, participation in the Wreaths Across America wreath laying and visits to Tut Fann State Veteran’s Home.
Is there anything that sets your group apart from other area programs?
Team Red, White & Blue is a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization with headquarters in Tampa, FL. with communities and chapters located across the nation. Team RWB is open to all veterans and civilians. There is no cost to join and no dues. Families are welcome at events/activities. Our chapters and communities deliver consistent, local opportunities for veterans and the community to connect through physical and social activity. And it is so much more than running. They host regular fitness activities, social gatherings, and participate in local races and events together. Veterans can also develop their leadership skills by serving as a volunteer leader in their local chapter. These programs are at the core of Team RWB’s mission.
Upcoming events include kickball games, dog walks, weekly group walk/jog/run, our First Annual Member Social Potluck (tentatively scheduled for October), participation as Team RWB team in the upcoming fall races including the Color Run, the Liz Hurley Ribbon Run, and the Huntsville Half Marathon.
How can someone get involved?
If you have not already joined the chapter, you can go to www.teamrwb.org and select Join The Team. Put Huntsville, AL in the remarks. Don’t forget to mark if you are a veteran!
