Walk with Dinosaurs on this Huntsville Road Trip
Only three hours north of Madison in Cave City, KY, a massive T-Rex looms over interstate 65. For years, our family has driven past this monument to the prehistoric beasts but only recently did we decided to stop and take a look around.
Dinosaur World is located a little north of Bowling Green, KY and is an easy drive from here, about 3.5 hours if you’re headed north. The park includes more than 150 life-size dinosaurs including a herd of giant Brachiosaurus, Mammoths and a pack of fierce-looking Velociraptors. My kids had a blast going up to each species and trying to say its name, and realizing that the creatures are bit larger in person than they’d realized. They were especially impressed with “long necks” as they say in the movie, The Land Before Time.
Next to each model is a display that tells a little about the dinosaur, where it roamed, what it ate (herbivore, carnivore, omnivore) and the time period in which it lived. Kids will love checking out the different species, including several babies included in the herds and displays; there’s even a dinosaur egg along the trail that kids can climb into.
Admission includes entry into the museum, which is a bit basic, but does include several dinosaur fossils, including Megalodon teeth, giant turtle shells, claws and other finds. Under normal circumstances, entry usually includes time on the playground and a fossil dig, but since we visited during COVID-19, all those activities were shut down. In lieu of not being able to dig for fossils each kid is given a bag with two little fossils as part of admission. The gem mine will be reopening again in Spring 2023.
All activities at Dinosaur World are outdoors, except the museum, and are dog friendly and handicapped accessible. The life-size dinos can be seen walking through a shaded, paved trail that can be easily navigated with strollers and wheelchairs. The walk to the T-rex by the interstate is not paved, but is plenty wide and mostly flat, but does have a few tree roots to navigate over, but it’s nothing that should be a hinderance.
Adult admission is $15.64, kids 3-12 are $12.46 and children 2 and under are free. Military personnel also receive free admission.
